Additionally, valves could be driven automatically or by changes in pressure, flow or temperature. These changes could act upon a piston or a diaphragm which in turn activates the valve. Various popular examples of this particular type of valve are found on boilers or safety valves fitted to hot water systems.

Valves are utilized in many complicated control systems that may require an automatic control which is based on external input. Controlling the flow through the pipe to a changing set point is one example. These circumstances generally require an actuator. An actuator will stroke the valve depending on its input and set-up, which enables the valve to be situated accurately while enabling control over various needs.
