Forklift Fuse - A fuse consists of a metal strip or a wire fuse element of small cross-section compared to the circuit conductors, and is usually mounted between a couple of electrical terminals. Normally, the fuse is enclosed by a non-conducting and non-combustible housing. The fuse is arranged in series which could carry all the current passing through the protected circuit. The resistance of the element generates heat due to the current flow. The size and the construction of the element is empirically determined in order to make sure that the heat generated for a regular current does not cause the element to reach a high temperature. In cases where too high of a current flows, the element either melts directly or it rises to a higher temperature and melts a soldered joint within the fuse which opens the circuit.
When the metal conductor components, an electric arc is formed between un-melted ends of the fuse. The arc starts to grow until the required voltage in order to sustain the arc is in fact greater as opposed to the circuits available voltage. This is what leads to the current flow to become terminated. When it comes to alternating current circuits, the current naturally reverses direction on each and every cycle. This method greatly improves the speed of fuse interruption. When it comes to current-limiting fuses, the voltage required in order to sustain the arc builds up fast enough so as to basically stop the fault current prior to the first peak of the AC waveform. This particular effect greatly limits damage to downstream protected units.
Normally, the fuse element is made up of silver, aluminum, zinc, copper or alloys which will offer predictable and stable characteristics. Ideally, the fuse will carry its rated current indefinitely and melt fast on a small excess. It is vital that the element should not become damaged by minor harmless surges of current, and must not oxidize or change its behavior subsequent to potentially years of service.
The fuse elements may be shaped to increase the heating effect. In bigger fuses, the current can be divided among several metal strips, whereas a dual-element fuse may have metal strips which melt at once upon a short-circuit. This type of fuse may even contain a low-melting solder joint that responds to long-term overload of low values than a short circuit. Fuse elements may be supported by steel or nichrome wires. This would make certain that no strain is placed on the element but a spring may be incorporated in order to increase the speed of parting the element fragments.
It is common for the fuse element to be surrounded by materials which are intended to speed the quenching of the arc. Air, non-conducting liquids and silica sand are some examples.
