Forklift Brakes - A brake drum is where the friction is provided by the brake shoes or brake pads. The pads or shoes press up against the rotating brake drum. There are some other brake drums types with certain specific differences. A "break drum" will generally refer to when either shoes or pads press onto the interior surface of the drum. A "clasp brake" is the term used so as to describe if shoes press against the exterior of the drum. One more type of brake, called a "band brake" utilizes a flexible belt or band to wrap around the exterior of the drum. Where the drum is pinched in between two shoes, it could be referred to as a "pinch brake drum." Like a standard disc brake, these types of brakes are somewhat uncommon.

Early brake drums, before 1955, needed to be constantly modified so as to compensate for wear of the shoe and drum. "Low pedal" could result if the required adjustments are not performed satisfactorily. The vehicle can become hazardous and the brakes can become ineffective if low pedal is combined with brake fade.

There are various Self Adjusting Brake Systems accessible, and they can be categorized within two main types, RAI and RAD. RAI systems have built-in equipments that avoid the systems to recover if the brake is overheating. The most popular RAI makers are Bosch, AP, Bendix and Lucas. The most famous RAD systems consist of Ford recovery systems, Volkswagen, VAG, AP and Bendix.

The self adjusting brake will usually just engage whenever the vehicle is reversing into a stop. This method of stopping is suitable for use where all wheels use brake drums. Disc brakes are used on the front wheels of vehicles today. By working only in reverse it is less possible that the brakes will be adjusted while hot and the brake drums are expanded. If adjusted while hot, "dragging brakes" could happen, which increases fuel intake and accelerates wear. A ratchet device which becomes engaged as the hand brake is set is one more way the self adjusting brakes could function. This means is only appropriate in functions where rear brake drums are utilized. Whenever the emergency or parking brake actuator lever goes over a specific amount of travel, the ratchet developments an adjuster screw and the brake shoes move in the direction of the drum.

There is a manual adjustment knob situated at the base of the drum. It is generally adjusted through a hole on the other side of the wheel and this involves going beneath the vehicle with a flathead screwdriver. It is of utmost significance to move the click wheel properly and adjust every wheel equally. If unequal adjustment occurs, the vehicle may pull to one side during heavy braking. The most effective method to be able to guarantee this tedious task is done carefully is to either raise each wheel off the ground and hand spin it while measuring how much force it takes and feeling if the shoes are dragging, or give each one the same amount of clicks manually and then perform a road test.
